What is Supplemental Social Security Income?

Supplemental Social Security Income (SSI) is a monthly payment to people with low income that are 65 or older, blind or disabled. Disabled or blind children can also receive SSI.

Whether or not you qualify for SSI depends on what your income is. Income includes your wages, social security benefits and pensions, food and shelter. The Social Security Administration will use part of your spouse's income and resources when deciding whether you qualify for SSI. For children, the Social Security Administration will look at the child's parents' income, if applicable.

The Social Security Administration will also look at your resources in determining whether you qualify for SSI. This includes your real estate, bank accounts, cash, stocks and bonds.

To get SSI, you must live in the United States and be a U.S. citizen or national. There are some exceptions where noncitizen residents can qualify for SSI. If you are eligible for Social Security or other benefits you should apply for both because you may be eligible for either or both benefits.

Our attorneys normally advise you to fill the initial application out and begin the process yourself. If you get approved for benefits, then you don't need an attorney's assistance. Of course if you need help, our social security attorneys are happy to help navigate you in the right direction.

Many times, people are denied during the initial application but upon reviews or requests for rehearing they become eligible. Having an attorney during the hearing process is especially important because your attorney will obtain favorable medical records, as well as question you and other medical witnesses. Our social security attorneys only get paid if you win.

Wherever you are at in the process, our attorneys can help guide you in the right direction.
